My job

I am a Scientist and I work on the Institute for Sustainable Agriculture (IAS).

In general I study the use of new technologies (remote sensing) in agriculture. Particular I study precision agriculture (precision farming or site specific agriculture).

Precision agriculture takes into account the spatial variability of biotic factors such as weeds and pathogens, and of abiotic factors such as nutrients or water content, and uses diverse technologies to apply fertilizers, pesticides or other inputs at variable rates, fitted to the needs of each small defined area.

Remote sensing is an important tool in precision agriculture since it can provides mapping of biotic factors such as weed patches or fertility levels, among other factors.

In my studies I use every kind of remote images available. Such as, satellite images (QuickBird and GeoEye-1), aerial images and Unmaned aerial vehicle (UAV) images.

Recently, I have published a new method to do site specific application herbicide maps by the use of aerial images.

Now I am studying the way to improve georeferenciation process, making it automatically. For this purpose I have developed a series of Artificial Terrestrial Targets (I call it ATT), that I place in the study sites. I have developed specific software that can locate ATT in the remote image and does the coregistration process semiautomatically.

The next step in my work, among others, is to develop a remote image calibration system and a cropping systems classification. Both systems will allow me to do an automatic recognition of every land use in the image and to compare images at different dates. I have started this studies but I am still focused in coregistration procedures.

I went to a lot of congress in precision farming and weed management and I did some papers and a lot of seminars. Next September I am going to do a seminar in Berlin.

Although I am a very busy scientist everybody thinks I spent my time doing nothing.

Señora!

Mrs!

(That night) The moon wasn’t full and there wasn’t fucking star in the sky.
We both were sitting in the back seat of my 1430 (Seat 1430, a very old and uncomfortable car)
There was any love song in the radio, we were listening football.
When Murcia scored a goal we started to caress each other.
While I was removing her blouse I could see the tattoos in her breast.
A snake eating rat’s guts in the left one and devil’s face en the right one.
She climbed on me and said that I have between my legs a huge thing (inhuman).
And I said her not to illusion because that was the hand brake.

(Chorus)

Mrs! I go out with you daughter,
but don’t worry about it because I’m going to bring her here in a moment.
Mrs! sleep quiet
because I only drink coke.
Mrs! I love your daughter
although she loves me for fifteen minutes.
And don’t you be upset
because I am not going to touch her till after the wedding.

I put twenty centimetres of my tongue in her ear and she made all “pot soup”.
I crossed my fingers and said her “I love you” and she began to kiss my neck.
The second time she made sure what she took wasn’t the hand brake.
And I promised her mother that I’m not going to touch her till after the wedding.

(Chorus)

Malviviendo Philosophy

Malviviendo Philosophy
And that’s the way every day goes… always is the same. Letting the hours go by, like commercials that we watch while our favorite program begins…
Come back home late, lying to me and swearing that tomorrow I’m going to be more serious… I’m growing old…
Who I want to lie?... I will continue sitting here waiting for a fluke… soon or later luck have to touch me.

¿A quién quiero engañar ?... Seguiré sentado esperando un golpe de suerte...tarde o temprano me tiene que tocar a mí...

Green technology in Spain

Since 1980’s in Spain there has been a tremendous development of Renewable Energy. Such as solar panels, wind mills, hydroelectric energy, etc. Despite this development, we still depend on non renewable energies.
Nowadays, the use of green technology has become a very popular topic and has been encouraged by the governing bodies from Europe. Most Spanish cities recycle their waste and government teaches people about green technology goodness.
This green practices and technologies still have to be improved to really compete with nuclear and petrol energies.
In my opinion, green technologies are the future of energy, and it´s necessary to have a better world for our children.

Falling Soldier

The picture is called “falling soldier” (muerte de un miliciano)
I chose this picture because it’s the most famous picture about Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and represents clearly the horrors of the war. Thus, the picture worldwide showed the Spanish conflict.
The picture represents Federico Borell who was nicknamed “El Taino” .He is falling dead in Cerro Muriano (Córdoba) in September 5, of 1936. Federico was a Spanish anarchist who fought in the CNT militia from Alcoi (Alicante) to defend the Spanish Republic against the Spanish Nationalist forces of Francisco Franco.
Federico arrived Cerro Muriano a few hours before with fifty people more to reinforce the militia. That afternoon, some enemy troops infiltrated behind the lines and fired the militia from behind. Then Federico was shot and died.
The picture was taken by Robert Capa, a famous war reporter, and was published in September 23, of 1936 in the French journal “Vu”.

Last Holidays

Last holidays I was in Tavira Island. Tavira is a small village from the south of Portugal which has an island called Tavira too. I went with Zoraida, my girlfriend.
I went by car because it’s not far from Cordoba, it’s only three hours.
I only was one day and I didn't sleep in Tavira's camping but three years ago I did it in summer.
The weather was very fine, warmly and sunny, but the water was very cold.
In Tavira was an Eastern party, where you can play almost every summer sport. But sport is only an excuse to make a very big party with music, mojito and beer. Everybody was laughing, singing and dancing everywhere.
It was very funny. Next year I want to go back and have a whole week of beach party.

Some else I did yesterday

Some else I did yesterday.
There were a lot of more things that happened yesterday. For example, I went work cycling. I like to ride my bicycle.
We are now in spring and the weather is warmer. So, yesterday I wore jeans and t-shirt.
During my work time I always use to wear t-shirt. I don’t matter if is summer or winter. So, everybody says I am crazy.
At lunch I ate carbonara pizza, salad and a piece of fruit.
In the afternoon I went to the gym, it was very tiring. After gym I had a beer at “la cañita” with my friend Santi. We talked about an old film “Blade Runner”. Santi bought a pin with the blade runner logo.
Later, I went home and played Call of duty in my computer. Call of duty is quite good to eliminate stress and you don’t risk hurting somebody. Long time ago I played paintball, I liked very much but after play my body was painful and purple spotted.
These are some of the things that happened yesterday.

Third writing: What I did yesterday

What I did yesterday.
This time I tried to do simple and short phrases. I hope to do it better than previous writings.
Yesterday was a normal day of my life. I got up at eight o’clock and I got dressed. Them, I picked up my bicycle and went to work. It was a cold and cloudy day. Later, I had an appointment with my boss. It was very long. We talked about our next project in precision agriculture. I went home at fourteen.
A normal day of my life is something really boring.

SECOND WRITING: DE-URBANIZATION

Second Writing: “De-urbanization”

De-urbanization is a new trend in some developed countries. It consists on a progressive movement of people from cities to small villages.

Spain is still not as “developed” as de-urbanization progress come a real problem. There are only some signs of it progress in old people who come back from cities to their original villages where they were born.

Small villages have minor possibilities or facilities for young people but, however, have all the quietness old people need.

There are a lot of people from Germany and England who move to small villages of Andalusia, like Iznajar in Córdoba, when they go into retirement. As well it’s usual to those people to move to the coast, looking for warm and sunny places.

First writting "all about myself"

“All about myself”
I am David Gomez and was born in Madrid thirty two years ago. But now I live in Córdoba in the south of Spain. Córdoba is a small but nice town, with thousands of history flowing in it streets.
I studied forestry and a Master in agronomic production in the Universidad of Córdoba.
I had many different jobs, as agronomic consultant, engineer and some similar jobs, but now I work in the Institute for Sustainable Agriculture of the CSIC, where I study a PhD in precision agriculture too.
I like walk in the country, go to the cinema and play soccer but I didn’t play since about two years.
That’s a very short resume of who I am. I hope you like it.
